I mean, for real. If I did this, it would mean that I would have to either take an online course (which is doable, I’m sure) this summer or take an 18 credit semester next year (which would suck) in order to graduate on time.
But, for real? I could work in the white house! And the application doesn’t look too difficult… maybe I’ll fill it out just to see what happens. I mean, I don’t really particularly want to go home and then just leave a month later, but it would be a really awesome internship. I want to apply for the Communications department, 2nd choice- office of the first lady.
Can you imagine my resume? 4 months at the Associated Press, followed by 3 months working in the White House? It’d be killer.
There’s also the problem that I don’t have a place to live in Washington DC, or any money to help get a place to live… But I guess we could figure that one out if I get accepted. Oh, hmm, something to ponder.
Alex, you should really try to get this internship; it would be PERFECT for you. Think about it - yeah you would be missing a semester and all, but school can always be pushed back a little. You are crazy about politics and would give your resumé an extra bang! Also it would be really cool for me to brag about you to all my friends.
And on top of all of that, you could potentially be the next Monica Lewinsky.
Think about the possibilities.
I tried this a few years back. They are extremely hard to get. I would consider writing your reps/senators right now. I think it really helps if you know someone on the inside. But the letters of recommendation are the big thing. Not sure if party matters all that much, but I’m sure it can’t hurt.
You need to get reps and senators as references? But they don’t know me at all… I worked on Jay Nixon’s campaign for like two days on the phones, so maybe I could try to contact him? I was just going to try and get an AP person and my professors or something.
I mean, I’ve already had to settle in a completely different city once this year, so leaving again and jumping into a brand new internship right away seems quite overwhelming, but I should at least put in an application, right?
If you write you senators/reps most will send a letter of recommendation for you (especially the democratic ones right now!). You could even try like dean mills or something too. I just learned these things from a guy who did it a few years back.
As far as living goes DC is really easy because there are people moving in and out of there all the time. I think most of the college dorms are open for college-aged people too. It is expensive though.
DEFINELTY worth a try! DC is one of my favorite cities (despite being loaded with politicians).
Well…the guy, Dan, who replaced you worked for the Obama campaign. Maybe he knows someone who can pull a few strings. He said he was part of a conference call with Obama once.
